The Shoes Under Gen Z’s Trees, According to TikTok

A very Merry, 2003-nostalgic Christmas.

Despite concerns over rising prices and a shortened Christmas shopping season, thanks to a late Thanksgiving, early data suggests consumer shopping this holiday season was a strong success. According to Mastercard SpendingPulse, holiday sales from the beginning of November through Christmas Eve rose 3.8% over last year, a .7% increase from the climb between 2022 and 2023. CSA even called Cyber Monday the “biggest shopping day of all time.”

Among all that spending, who were the winners in footwear? TikToker and trend forecaster Casey Morrow Lewis did the hard work of combing through hundreds of Christmas hauls on TikTok to compile her most popular gifts of the year. Her No. 1 gift took us straight back to the early aughts: a digital camera. Not surprisingly, her footwear findings were similarly nostalgic.

Classic Uggs, specifically the Mini and Ultra Mini in Sand and Chestnut, were the second most popular gift, a rebound from the platform takeover of last year. Coming in at number 11 were the Adidas Campus sneakers. “Campuses are the new Gazelles, which were the new Sambas, as far as I can tell,” Lewis says.

Rhode cosmetics, Sol de Janeiro, Jellycat plush toys, and Roller Rabbit pajamas were among the other, non-shoe winners on Lewis’s list. New Balance 9060s were another hot Christmas gift shared widely on the app, though they didn’t make the cut for Lewis.
