A who’s who of A-listers graced the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art at last night’s Met Gala. The Vogue event celebrated this year’s Costume Institute exhibit: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Attendees dressed to impress for “The Garden of Time” dress code.
With flowing, couture gowns that often upstage the footwear, the sartorial event isn’t typically a big night for shoes. This year’s red carpet, however, showed a surprising array of shoe statements. We’ve rounded up our favorites:
Met Gala Men Brought Their Shoe Game
This year, dudes left their oxfords at home in favor of statement-making footwear. Bad Bunny dressed in a bespoke Maison Margiela suit with custom Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela Tabi Boots. Patent leather uppers overlayed with fur took the iconic split-toe style up a notch. Lil Nas X wore 50,000 Swarovski crystals on his glittering Luar suit, with similarly crystal-studded boots peeking from underneath.
Usher’s dramatically pointed shoes contributed to his theatrical look of a black tux and cape by Alexander McQueen. Josh O’Connor rocked head-to-toe Loewe, pairing a slim-cut tux with beaded floral shoes that the internet was quick to compare to gardening clogs. Hamish Bowles represented Vogue in satin lilac ballet flats, paired with a purple suit.
Celebrity Platforms
The ladies, meanwhile, took things to new heights in platform stilettos á la 2013. Jennifer Lopez paired couture Schiaparelli with peep-toe silk Andrea Wazen platforms. Dua Lipa’s sky-high platforms earned her a few extra inches for her Marc Jacobs and Tiffany & Co. boudoir ensemble.
Cynthia Erivo wore a deconstructed suit, adorned with petals and sequins by Thom Browne, paired with patent leather platform oxfords by the designer with a unique cylindrical construction. FKA Twigs wore crystal-embellished stiletto platforms with her barely there Stella McCartney ensemble. Shakira, on the other hand, matched crimson platform stilettos with a bright red Carolina Herrera gown.
Boots Made for Walking the Met Gala
Zoe Saldaña wore head-to-toe Chloe, pairing a sheer, ethereal dress with thigh-high leather boots. Erykah Badu wore an avant-garde Comme des Garçons dress with knee-high pointed-toe slouchy leather boots.
Sarah Jessica Parker Channeled Carrie Bradshaw
SJB was the real-life Carrie Bradshaw in an embroidered Richard Quinn corset ballgown and dramatic Philip Tracy headpiece. For the shoes, Parker pulled bedazzled sheer tights over nude stiletto pumps. Tights are having a moment, but this might be the first time they truly upstaged the footwear. Model Anok Yai took a similar approach in Swarovski. Her crystal-embellished ombre bodysuit also went straight over stiletto pumps for a one-piece effect.
