Reduce, Reuse, ReWair: Dr. Martens Gives Secondhand Footwear New Life

Unlaced is pleased to share this post by John Russel Jones from MR, our sister publication from Wainscot Media.

Dr. Martens boots have been considered a fashion icon almost since their introduction in the 1960s, but they were originally created for workwear—initially worn by postmen and policemen—so durability is part of the brand’s DNA. As part of Dr. Martens broader efforts towards circularity and Net-Zero by 2040, it has introduced the ReWair resale platform in the United States as the next step in the brands journey to offer lower-impact footwear.

“ReWair is an exciting step towards a more circular future for Dr. Martens,”says Anna Wickes, Recommerce Lead at Dr. Martens. “Timeless design and durability have always been core to our brand, and we’re passionate about offering resale to our US wearers. ReWair is just one of the ways we’re extending the life of our products as we work towards
being Net-Zero by 2040.’’

A team of skilled technicians at Tersus Solutions examines, repairs and restores pre-loved Dr. Martens products. Tersus is a cleaning technology and logistics company that works with premium brands such as The North Face, Patagonia, REI, New Balance, Arc’teryx, and Cotopaxi on their branded resale programs. The company serves the outdoor, athletic, luxury, and firefighter industries and is the leading recycler of down filled products in the USA.

Dr. Martens ReWair platform is supposed by Archive, a technology company that enables brands to launch and scale profitable resale businesses. Archive works with more than 50 global brands including The North Face, Oscar de la Renta, and New Balance to develop innovative recommerce programs that keep products out of landfill, while simultaneously bringing in a new revenue stream, building customer loyalty, and driving new customer acquisition.

Secondhand DM’s boots, shoes and bags will be available to purchase online at rewair.drmartens.com. As part of the ReWair initiative, a trade-in program will be introduced at Dr. Martens retail locations—Abbot Kinney in Los Angeles, CA and Portland, OR—where customers are invited to exchange their worn Dr. Martens footwear and bags for a $20 discount voucher towards a new pair.
