Bed Stü has carved a niche in finely crafted retro- and vintage-inspired boots since 1995. And thanks to the fact that its nostalgic take on footwear has fallen directly inline with Spring ’11’s call for classic and heritage styles, the collection has caught the attention of retailers who may have overlooked the brand in previous seasons. “We’ve been one of the leaders of this look for years and now the rest of the market has caught up,” says account executive Steve Katz, of Bed Stü’s Americana aesthetic.

For Spring ’11, the Camarillo, CA-based company is poised to capture more of the selling floor with season-less boot styles, as well as jazz shoes, oxfords and boat shoes. Katz says designers focused on fusing together unisex looks, noting orders for boat and jazz styles have been outstanding so far. “We tricked them out with Bed Stü signatures like washed-out leathers and garment dyes,” he explains. “The details aren’t too far out there, but they make the shoes unique to the market.” Mod silhouettes with crepe soles, moc-toe boots, waxed leathers and canvas and leather in shades of light blue, red, teal, brown and black round out the collection that Katz describes as “heavily influenced by denim trends”. Retail prices range from $70 to $150.

Aside from Nordstrom, Buckle and Amazon.com, Katz says more apparel buyers are taking note of the Bed Stü’s footwear and successful range of bags, belts, wallets and cuffs, opening the brand to a broader base of retailers. “The accessories blend well with the footwear, and our footwear is designed for what’s going in fashion, particularly denim. It’s a complete lifestyle range,” Katz says.

Fashion Advice: Soft Rock

Clean lines and no-nonsense neutrals marched down spring runways. Follow suit by taking note of footwear styles featuring fine leather detailing, flat silhouettes—at ease on and off sandy turf—and clusters of embellishment a la Richard Chai Love’s spangled shorts.
