The Heat is On
Hot days call for short shorts, and there’s been no shortage out and about town. Ladies who dare to bare leg are pairing their denim cutoffs with all types of footwear, but they note that when it comes to getting dressed for a busy, balmy day, the flat, casual and cute factors steer them to their shoe du jour. —Leslie Shiers
Love (Luv)
noun, verb
1. A profoundly tender, passionate affection for another
Nicole Mercado is the picture of laidback cool in her hi-tops, striped tee and throwback fanny pack, but “any shoe will go” with jean shorts, she says. Sneakers are a year-round staple for this San Fran resident, who approves of sandals but writes off California’s ubiquitous flip-flops. “They’re not my thing,” she shrugs. Besides, why go for a disposable option when you could be sporting fabulous kicks? “New York has the best sneakers,” she swears.
Option B: Gladiators
Finding extended life in last summer’s gladiator trend, Emily Bludman believes this sandal style is the perfect match when beating the heat in frayed, lived-in shorts. She notes she’d never top off this casual look with heels and that boots—while emerging as a year-round option—are a ridiculous choice in high humidity. As for alternatives, Emily’s in the market for flats and flip-flops and is considering test-driving the oxford trend, but is secretly pining for cooler temps so she can break out her beloved Nike Dunks.
Option C: Oxfords
The menswear look has burst out of its fall confines as consumers continue to sweat this accelerating trend. While Tenzin Sangmo confesses to being a flip-flop fanatic, she notes her oxfords are comfortable, simple, and simultaneously classic and of-the-moment. “They go with everything, from skirts and summer dresses to skinny jeans,” she affirms.
