The Popular Music and Media Extravaganza Tries on Fashion Fashion and music are a match made in pop culture heaven, and in its 25th year the recent edition of the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference in Austin, TX, saluted the twosome with Style X (pronounced Style By), the festival’s first fashion and shopping event.

Similar to what SXSW did for musicians John Mayer in 2000 and Florence and the Machine in ’08, Style X showcased emerging brands from around the world during the two-day event that kicked off with Shop Hop, a media-exclusive tour of up-and-coming designers. Other events, open to the public, included panel discussions on how to break into the fashion biz, interactive booths, fashion shows modeled by musicians and pop-up retail stores.
Along with apparel and accessories, brands like X Ray Jeans, Idylwild, Lumete Eyewear and American Apparel (which brought more than 20,000 reduced items for sale), visitors had a chance to spy the latest from footwear brands Bed Stu, Zodiac, Keds and HELM Handmade Boots. —Angela Velasquez
