Starring at the Venice Film Festival
Glamorous fashion and high-profile celebs generated a bigger buzz than some of the movies debuting at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Perhaps designers found inspiration in their favorite film genres? From feel-good colors and sweeping, romantic gowns, fashion drummed up drama on the red carpet. Here’s a look at the festival’s best looks and how footwear played an important supporting role. —Angela Velasquez

Orange County
Bright, fresh and happy, orange makes headway as a color that transcends seasons. Both Gwyneth Paltrow, in a simple Prada dress, and Marisa Tomei, in a more complicated, geometric Preen top and skirt, ground the color with blocks of black. Jil Sander hits the same bold note with chunky color block pumps.

The Princess Diaries
From Kiera Knightley’s Victorian-esque Valentino gown to Evan Rachel Wood’s Alessandra Rick shirtdress, young Hollywood is having a princess moment. Reminiscent of Kate Middleton’s wedding gown, red-carpet gowns are making a dramatic entrance with long-sleeves, regal fabrics, light colors and delicate details, similar to these D’orsday heels by Kate Spade.

Red Hots
Proof that there is a shade of red for everyone, Madonna, who just turned 53, and super model mom Cindy Crawford heat up the red carpet in slinky rouge gowns. Whether tastes lean towards Crawford’s elegant asymmetrical Roberto Cavalli gown or quirky and retro a la Madonna’s Vionnet butterfly print dress and sparkly Miu Miu cat eye shades, footwear designers offer hot looks like this Donald J Pliner stiletto that that speak to both fashion senses.
