Decades Surfing
On an island with as many personas as it has food trucks these days, it’s no surprise that New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week presented an eclectic mix of trends, running the gamut from ’40s-inspired tailoring to ’70s glam to ’90s minimalism to just plain out there. One thing is guaranteed: Fall ’11 designer footwear will offer something for everyone, no matter what decade you might be dressing in.

Burn Rubber

Marc Jacobs’ fall collection was a study in opposites attract. The designer mixed provocative latex dresses, oxford shirts and capris with nipped-waist wool jackets and a smattering of nostalgic polka dots. The pattern multiplied as polka dots were carried into hosiery, showing off a range of patent wedge boots that grounded the quirky collection.

Back to the Future - Michael Kors
Back to the Future
With a nod to his earlier designs, Michael Kors presented a familiar collection of relaxed yet impeccably tailored separates. Skirts with high slits, dresses that hit mid-calf and leather mini dresses were the perfect foils for Kors’ silver space-age platforms. And for those who believe the over-the-knee boots trend is already dead and buried, Kors silenced naysayers with a pair of sleek yet wearable styles in gray and black.

All the Riches - Oscar de la Renta
All the Riches
Maybe it was the return of clean ’90s-era lines that permeated many of the New York runways that made Oscar de la Renta’s ready-to-wear collection feel swathed in excess. Or, maybe it was the cashmere, beading, embroidery, fur, lame, etc. The collection’s opulent story carried down to footwear with velvet, emerald green leather and gilded stiletto heels.
