No fashion snobs allowed—at least for one night.
Boutiques, chains, department stores, luxury retailers, discount outlets and young designers across all five New York boroughs, will unite for Fashion’s Night Out—a global initiative staged by Vogue, CFDA, the City of New York and NYC & Company to reignite the metropolis’ adoration for shopping and fashion. Retailers plan to mark the occasion with in-store incentives, capsule collections, celebrity and designer appearances, and soirees worthy of fashion week’s elite, as ways to entice patrons back into their stores. Events will be open to anyone and everyone with an interest in shopping.
Many shoe retailers and designers are getting in on fashion frenzy. The Manolo Blahnik boutique promises a meet-and-greet with the master himself, along with other surprises. Visitors to Jimmy Choo will get a behind-the-scenes peak of a Vogue photo shoot with founder and president Tamara Mellon, and guests at Tod’s will have a chance to view the techniques involved in the creation of its signature driving moc. At Taryn Rose, reflexologists will be available to discuss the benefits of well-constructed footwear and guests can enter to win free flats. Other events include Spanish tapas and drinks at Camper, a drawing to win a year’s worth of shoes from DSW and an opportunity to have sneakers customized by local artists at Adidas.
Festivities begin on Sept. 10, falling in line with the first day of fashion week, and will take place between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. In conjunction, a three-day citywide clothing drive will benefit the New York City AIDS Fund and a limited edition T-shirt will be available at participating locations. Forty percent of the tee’s sales will be donated to the National Sept. 11 Monument and Museum. Similar events will take place in other fashion hot spots around the world, including London, Milan, Moscow and Paris.
