Les Miserables’ costume designer, Paco Delgado, revealed to WWD that actress Anne Hathaway wore “sophisticated flats” made by “specific shoemakers” to play Fantine.
“She’s vegan, so we couldn’t use any animal materials on the shoes for her character Fantine. We had to find very specific shoemakers to create lace-up boots and ankle boots,” Delgado said. “We also did flats that were much more sophisticated.”
Delgado also noted that as well as Hathaway’s dietary restrictions, the 19th century setting of the film impacted on the footwear he could use to dress the cast, and that Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean) requested wooden clogs to wear on set.
