Merrell Socks It to Us

When suiting up for a trail run or a hike, Merrell loyalists will soon be able to don the label’s socks before stepping into their Jungle Mocs, as the Rockford, MI-based Wolverine World Wide division bows performance socks for Spring ’10.
The company reportedly did a small sock launch for Fall ’09, testing the product through Dick’s Sporting Goods stores, and is following up next spring with a full collection for men and women. Merrell touts the line’s Enhanced Wool Endurance (E.W.E.) Technology—a mix of natural wool fibers and synthetics such as Duraline and Coolmax, which provide performance attributes like abrasion resistance and moisture wicking. But in my opinion, the innovative “I-must-have-these-now” feature is the zoning on each sock—pressure points get extra-cush while other areas feature ventilation panels that make the post-jog, -hike or -climb peel-off much less sticky. Also, a gender-specific fit means no sliding around or dealing with bunchy, bulky fabric.
Merrell socks come in sizes small through extra large (for men sizes 4 to 15.5 and women 4.5 to 12) and retail for approximately $15 to $18. And as a further boon for retailers whose sock walls get destroyed on an everyday basis, the company’s packaging can be easily removed and replaced, so customers can try on a pair with shoes if they wish but unpurchased pairs can be re-hung with ease.
